The Great Firewall of China, or just the Great Firewall (GFW), is a mixture of legislative actions and technologies enforced by the People’s Republic of China to regulate the Internet, and it works by monitoring all of China’s internet activities: blocking access to select foreign websites for political reasons, blocking certain foreign internet tools and mobile apps, limiting access to foreign information sources, and requesting that foreign companies on the Chinese market agree to its domestic regulations.
The procured enforcements are to help China slow down its cross-border internet traffic.
In the event that someone searches for a prohibited word or tries to access a blocked webpage the security system’s artificial intelligence will not only automatically restrict many of these actions but will notify authorities, in some cases, resulting in fines, arrest, or both.
Naturally, there are ways around these restrictions, but they are usually illegal in that they violate the very purpose of the Chinese governments’ data policy.
